Taps: great upscale casual dining 11/17/2009 Located in downtown Brea, Taps is consistently one of the best places for upscale casual dining.  I've been here for brunch, lunch, happy hour, and dinner.  The food is always great, and the service is always wonderful.
Let's start with drinks.  Taps brews their own beers in addition to serving the usual suspects.  I'm not a beer afficionado, but I've been told that the house brews are very good.  The bartenders are consistently good...cranking out great mojitos, margaritas, and martinis.  There's a nice wine selection, too.
As for food, seafood is Taps' forte.  The oysters are shucked to order, and are always delightful.  Fresh and briny, not a bit of grit or sand to them.  I've had them raw and Rockefeller style, and can't decide which one I like best...I guess it depends on how hungry I am.  I love the drunken mahi mahi...sake-marinated mahi mahi cooked to perfection and served with an interesting crab tostada, rice, and sauteed vegetables.  Also just as good:  ceviche, jumbalaya, Chilean sea bass, and ahi tuna.
I'm also a fan of their Champagne Sunday Brunch.  They have a New Orleans-style jazz ensemble play throughout the meal.  Great seafood offerings include:  ceviche, oysters, shrimp, and smoked salmon.  Don't the the sushi rolls...not only are they strange, but they don't taste very good.  There's a great cheese selection from around the world, and some very good antipasto offerings (marinated artichokes, tapanade, olives, bruschetta, roasted peppers, and roasted garlic).  The carving station has ham, roast turkey, and prime rib.  The prime rib is really good....have never made it over to the ham and turkey because I'm usually too stuffed by then.  In addition to mashed potatoes and veggies, they also offer jumbalaya, gumbo, and dirty rice.  They also offer made-to-order omlettes and crepes; your order is made in the kitchen so there's no line if you want eggs.  The dessert station has a chocolate fountain with assorted accoutrements, fresh-made bananas Foster, and lovely tiny little desserts.  I love the bananas Foster.  Brunch also includes unlimited champagne, mimosas, beer or drinks.
What's most excellent about Taps is the service.  The staff is friendly and knowledgable about the menu.  Glasses are topped off even when it's 3/4 full.  And should you have any problems, just let them know and they'll take care of it.
