Din Tai Fung’s signature dish is the Shanghainese xiao long bao, a delicate steamed dumpling filled with meat and soup. The Arcadia location is one of the many global derivatives of the original restaurant in Taipei, Taiwan.

Din Tai Fung is a bit different compared to your "standard" XLB but that is what makes it special! And if you don't care that much for XLB, DTF still has lots of other great noodles and rice dishes to choose from. Be sure to order dessert- both the red bean/taro dumplings and the red bean cake and the eight treasures sticky rice are fantastic!

For as popular as this place is (and knows that they are), you'd think they'd be able to NOT run around out of food. I mean, if they don't run out of food, people come in droves. If they DO run out of food, they still come in droves but aren't forced to drown their "lack of red bean" sorrows over at JJ Bakery across the plaza for want of an order of Red Bean dumplings.

The dumplings were wonderful. The Pork Dumplings ($7.25) were round and filled with broth, while the Pork and Shrimp Shiu Mai ($9) each had a whole shrimp inserted into their open tops.

Din Tai Fung, one of the most famous names in either side of the Pacific when the topic of Xiao Lung Bao (XLB, soup dumplings) is mentioned. I've had it a few times in the two stores in Taipei (which has since expanded to 3 stores), and I was also dragged there a few times to the Arcadia location when I first moved to Southern California. Everytime, my reaction to eating here was a "meh." I was never impressed, but since I never took food pictures then, I figured it was about time to try Din Tai Fung again.

i've been to din tai fung several times...and all the times i've been here i never had a really satisfing moment. Honestly, i dont think this is the "best" dumpling place in LA like many ppl are saying. Yes, i agree that their juicy pork dumpling is good, but not THAT good. argue w/ me all you want, but the pork itself is REALLY NOT that tasty. It's small and mushy. I don't think dumpling meat should be mushy. It should be firm - where i can actually bite and chew. The soup from the juicy pork dumplings was okay. I will admit that the skin of the dumpling is nice and thin and has the right texture and durability. Not like a lot of other place that are thick, like it can be a "man tao".
i had their siu mai .. it was eh - okay.. i had better. i prefer the cantonese dim sum siu mai. We also ordered the juicy crab and pork dumpling.. this was nothing special. tastes just like the juicy pork dumpling and in addition you can taste the seafoodness from the crab.
My parents ordered a dumpling w/ sticky rice... i actually like this dish; it was unique...basically it's sticky rice wrapped w/ dumpling skin. it was tasty and definitely filling cuz of all the carbs.
one time, i came here w/ a vegetarian friend so we ordered a fish dumpling and a vege dumpling. BLECH to both dishes. enough said. just dont order it if you're a meat eater. actually don't even bother going to din tai fun if you're vegetarian.
we also ordered the shanghai style noodles... omg.. i think i can eat that plate all by myself in 5 seconds. (yes it's that small) and the time when we ordered it, you can taste a burnt wok smell - i dislike that.
another time, i came here for their weekend only dish, the soup dumplings. NOT what i was expecting. And seriously? these little dumplings are that popular? i really don't understand. What i had in mind, when i read "soup dumpling" is a bigger form of juicy pork dumpling, but filled w/ soup (with or w/o meat, doesnt matter). Just like the kind u can get in Shanghai. And u have to literally use a straw to drink the soup. But what i actually got is a bowl of soup (which is kinda bland) and 20 mini dumplings. That's it! it's really nothing special.
Now i dont mind paying a lot of money on a dish that's above par. At Din Tai Fung, not only are the portions small but it's overpriced AND the quality is just okay.
I will not crave to go back to din tai fung. nor is din tai fung the first restaurant that will ever pop up in my mind to eat shanghai food. i don't mind going back to din tai fung (if other ppl are craving for it).. but it is definitely not my first choice on the list.

I used to like this place, but I think they've really gone downhill ... The last two times I went it really wasn't as good. Not as juicy, was a bit on the cold side, and kinda bland.
Plus they're on the small price compared to other places. With the price they're charging it's really not worth it anymore :( Sorry DTF, but I'm moving on!!

Great for soup dumplings, everything else just OK

DTF is well-regarded for their exquisite xiaolongbaos (soup dumplings), with a thinner, more delicate dumpling skin than most and a lighter broth. A must-order anytime I visit there. Tastewise, I cannot discern much difference from the crab & pork version (versus just pork) so I'd say save the $1-2 and order it w/o the crab.
With the exception of the XLB and the appetizer (basically a cold salad of tofu, seaweed and glass noodles in a pepper-spiked vinegar marinade), the rest of their menu is a hit-and-miss. I'd definitely stay away from the fried rice dishes, which comes out near-white and is just as flavorless as it looks. The non-XLB dumplings tend to be on the blander side as well.
As for ambience/service, a bit more upscale than the other dumpling houses in the area, but not by much. It's still fairly casual, and the servers are pretty fast, efficient and no-nonsense. Not particularly good for a romantic date (unless the other person's a foodie too), but alright for celebratory events.

This is a Taiwanese style dumpling house (a sister restaurant to the world famous original in Taipei) - thus, their best dumplings (the "juicy pork" ones) are thin-skinned, small, and filled with hot flavorful soup along with the pork. You gotta know how to eat them properly to enjoy them (bite a small hole in the skin from the top, blow in them until cool enough, then eat whole - the soup inside is the best part). The dumplings that don't have soup in them are ok. Try the red bean dumplings for dessert. For larger, thicker and sweeter-skinned dumplings with soup inside, check out Mei Long Village in Monterey Park. Another thing to note, this place closes at 2pm, then reopens at 5pm and goes to 9pm for dinner. Get here early cause there is always a wait.
