5/31/2010 In my circle of friends, the question "What's for dessert?" immediately follows the last bite of dinner.

True to form, as my friends and I wrapped up a recent lackluster dinner at Charcoal Grill, we began discussing our next (sweet) stop. After throwing around a few ideas, my friend Josh was appalled to learn that I had never visited Scoops. Thus, it was settled and to Scoops we went.

be surprised 9/9/2009 Brown bread, black sesame ginger, Thai ice tea, Guinness chocolate, mascarpone oreo, banana marsala wine, pistachio jasmine, grapefruit reisling....if these ice cream flavors haven't already enticed you head over to Scoops, we don't know what you're waiting for!!

There are a variety of creamy ice cream, fruity sherberts, as well as soy and vegan based iced creams. The texture of the ice cream is not the richest or creamiest we've ever had, but the flavors are just outstanding. There's a white board in the corner for you to suggest flavor combinations--go ahead, post your wildest flavor combinations and it might just be the next flavor at Scoops. You often see Tai Kim, owner and mastermind, around the shop with an apron talking to customers. A "single" scoop will run you $2.75 but that gets you two scoops of up to two flavors. Only 1.75 for refills. There's free toppings, although we never partake--hate to mess up his ingenious flavor creations! Just don't fall in love with a flavor because you may not find it again the next time around as flavors change frequently.

There's only a handful of small tables and a single love seat. The decor is minimalist with rotating hipster art on the walls. Best seating is outside patio on a summer day. Parking can be tricky, but you can use the metered parking at LA community college right next door. There's always an adventure of flavors waiting at Scoops.

8/15/2009 Hearing about Scoops killer Guinness gelato from a co-worker, I had to give it this establishment a try. Being an Irish girl I have a fondness for any product that contains the stuff and an admiration for anyone creative enough to make it into a frozen confection. Read more from their blog

2/4/2009 It seems like such a weird location. A small, cute place decorated with christmas lights next to dark industrial buildings on a small street.
But it's known to be the best ice cream in LA, so the crowds still gather (even when students from the LACC next door already gone home) sitting on small tables outside.Scoops offers a variety of flavors - from really unique flavors to dairy-free and vegan selections.

We ordered the large one - 6 flavors!! It was less than $6 and it ended up being 2 large full styrofoam containers! They are very generous and much cheaper than, say, gelato places!
So the flavors we got were:
Strawberry Lingonberry, Chocolate coconut, lemon mint sorbet, raisin and white wine, black sesame

AMAZING! I felt like I have not had ice cream this good in a long time! The strawberry lingonberry was my favorite. Their ice cream is very smooth and creamy, their sorbey really refreshing. Their chocolate ice cream was wonderful - very chocolatey.

Of course, we couldn't finish it all so we ended up taking one container home. It didn't refreeze too well :/ (melted on the way home) but it was still very good. It's a bit far from my place, but nonetheless, mark my words, I will be back, even when it's no longer hot outside!

Love Coming Back For The New Flavors! 1/3/2009 Dear Scoops,

I HATE YOU! You are so freaking far away from me! Yet I LOVE YOU enough to plan a meeting with a friend somewhere in LA on a TRAFFICKY Saturday to see you.  You are just like the seasons and keep changing on me.  Why are you so temperamental about your tastes, but that is okay since that is why I love you. One day to the next, it's always something different and you keep me guessing.  Today you had me at BLACK TRUFFLE & HAZELNUT!

You have sealed my LOVE and HATE for you now! How can I deny myself the PLEASURE ^_- of your company! I need you! I want you! I can't live without you! Come over to my place tonight and I will have you all night long! Oh baby baby! O=9

Forever yours... Now and forever!
~Kat

They are hit or miss on certain flavors but I think they have a wide variety to choose from and you can usually find one you really like.  My friend wasn't paying attention and got Strawberry Black Pepper.  Some people were overjoyed about it but he didn't pay attention and had to pay the price in drinking all the black peppers lol!  So today I finally had the almighty Black Truffle Maple and Hazelnut Date.  Granted that the ice cream did not have a very strong truffle flavor but it was still smooth and delectable.  The service was friendly like always and people who go there are so sweet.  I met some new friends I guess you would say.

We were discussing truffles and this guy who should have been ordering started asking me extensive questions about truffles.  It was quite funny and odd but I explained stuff to him about if they added more truffle infused oils it would be heavenly! I had to cut my talk short b/c the girl he was with was annoyed and I had to head back home for dinner! lol So I gave him my card for my site if he wants to talk to me and we shook hands.  He asked if I was a Truffle Oil Seller! HAHA! My friend asked if I knew him and I said.. nope! What an interesting day! lol

On another visit..
They had so many interesting flavors that I wanted to try... Chocolate Wasabi, Guinness Coffee, Almond Figs, Brie Pear, and more! Yes, I did it with all of them... licked the spoon too! lol The flavors I decided to have for myself were the Pistachio Jalapeno, Black Sesame Coconut, and Goat Cheese with Lemon and Verbana... my favorite was the Goat Cheese.. the texture and taste were completely on point and flavorful! The lemon flavor brought out the subtle sweetness of the cheese.  There were plenty of pistachios in the ice cream and a slight kick of the jalapeno but you would get a stronger kick after a few more bites.

Can't wait to try out new flavors 12/11/2008 This place was got the hottest buzz in all of 2007. It was the littlest place that could.

It seemed like came out of no where, especially that they don't rely on paid advertisements. It's the word of mouth that spread like wildfire. This little ice cream parlor is located close to LACC. It's your typical ice cream shop with only a cooler station to hold cold drinks. (No hot beverages sold here).

The owner, Tai Kim would rotate new flavors every two weeks (except made for the Brownbread flavor, which is the #1 seller).

The weird concocations of mixing several ingredients into making one flavor gave him the title of the Mad Scientist. Have you tried Goat Cheese Lavender? How about Fig & Wasabi? Coconut Horchata?

Well, if you haven't, let me tell you...it's out of this world! Yes, those are actual flavors and they do taste good as an ice cream. There are some flavors that might not agree with you, but more so or not Tai would come up with flavors that would rocked your world.

The price is $2.75 per scoop, but every scoop includes two flavors. Essentially you get two flavor of ice cream for one scoop. They also have vegan soy based flavor if you are lactose intolorent and wanted to try the natural flavor.

You heard the buzz, now go try it!

An LA gem for eccentric flavor ice creams 12/9/2008 Wow!  No one wrote about Scoops yet -- how can that be?

Anyways, Scoops is a well-known East Hollywood ice cream parlor known for their eccentric but surprisingly good ice cream flavors (even the vegan varieties)  The ice creams are made fresh every day and changes daily (the only consistent one being the "brown bread" flavor with crunchy granola bits embedded within). Some of the more memorable ones I've had included the pecan-gorgonzola-pear with chunks of the blue cheese within, the balsamic strawberry, and the chocolate guiness (owner Tai Kim is a big beer and wine fan so often there'll be a few alchy flavors).

On my most recent trip, I had the Persian-inspired pistachio-cardamom and saffron-almond-honey, both are great with subtle flavors and little nut bits within.

A single scoop is $2.75 but you can choose two flavors; and of course, you're allowed (even encouraged) to try a few before committing to a scoop.
