I'd been looking around for good tacos de cabeza. I've hit up a number of taco joints around LA, and even a bunch of taco trucks. Mainly what I found was cabeza that was boiled and minimally seasoned. Topped with some salsa, chopped onion and cilantro, they're all pretty similar.
Upon my friend Juan's recommendation, I rolled over to El Monte Sunday morning and began my mini fooddigging expedition.
Located near Amigo Motors, El Carey Market's large sign is difficult to miss. Since I was headed east on Garvey, I swung a U and parked right in front of the market. Not knowing what to expect, I walked in and found myself back in my childhood memories where I would walk Mexican markets in Mexicali.
In the grungy market, I saw a Chinese woman to the left stocking the Mexican pastry shelf with freshly baked goods. To the right, I saw tables and chairs running alongside of a meat counter that featured various marinated and unmarinated meats. Next to the meat counter, a gentleman was serving up some gorgeous tacos. I walked up and asked, 'a donde puedo ordenar?'. His response? 'Order from the checkout stand', and he pointed to where a lady was paying for her groceries.
When I got to the checkout stand, I said 'can I order some tacos?" Her response? 'Que?'
So I ordered 2 tacos de cabeza, 2 tacos de lengua, y 2 tacos de asada. After being to all of these other places, I was expecting some tiny tacos. At 2 bucks each, I paid the 12 dollars for the tacos and hopped in my car. I wasn't feeling quite comfortable in the area, so I drove a few miles towards Monterey Park and parked. I opened up the containers and found these massive tacos overstuffed with meat. I started salivating and picked up a taco de lengua. The tongue was perfectly cooked...tender, but not overly tender. The cabeza was amazing. By the time I got to taco #5, I felt like throwing up because I was so full. I powered through and finished, but could not even consider eating the meat that fell out of the tacos. Usually, that's my favorite part, but I was hunched over in pain, but still smiling.
The area was a bit sketchy, but it was 11 in the morning. The tacos were truly amazing and the best I've had in a long time.
