A hidden gem for now 4/28/2009 The contemporary Japanese cuisine with French nuances at Maison Riz took me by surprise.  It’s located directly on the water so the views are spectacular.  Most waterfront restaurants that I’ve frequented have typically fallen short in the kitchen so to my pleasant surprise the journey began.

I started with a sea bream carpaccio with yuzu-kosho vinaigrette and olive oil.  This was followed by the spicy tuna tartare which consisted of ahi sashimi served over minced avocados surrounded by a citrus-spinach emulsion served with a thin parmesan coated cracker.  The savory element of this dish was incredible and the parmesan cracker added complexity and length to the finish on the palate.   A kaleidoscopic Burg would be a good parallel.

Next up was the petite tasting menu for $55.  There were 2 appetizers followed by a rice cracker encrusted sea bass served in a light dashi sauce.  Next came the Kobe beef served with a port wine reduction sauce and variously textured vegetables served over a tiny mountain of mashed potatoes.  This was the most visually entertaining dish of the evening.  The first thing I thought of when I saw this was “Frank Gehry.”  The next course consisted of 3 nigiris…tuna marinated in a soy citrus solution, yellowtail with fine Japanese pepper, and imported Japanese scallop with a black truffle shaving.  The scallop nigiri was simply incredible.  Dessert was a tasting menu within itself.  There was strawberry ice cream with chocolate mousse cake, green tea tiramisu, and a reconstructed fruit infused orange gelatin served in its original skin.

IMHO this is easily the best fine dining experience in the South Bay.
Recommended Dishes Scallop nigiri, Spicy tuna tartare
