Nice French Brasserie in Culver City 6/4/2009 French Brasseries seem to be all the rage in Los Angeles right now.  This particular one seems to be the most authentic, which is both a good thing and sometimes a bad thing.

The owner/chef used to run Angelique Cafe, which had beloved, authentic bistro fare but was located in a strange part of downtown LA (before the downtown resurgence.)

The French onion soup -- one of the best I've ever had.  Not overly salty, not overly cheesy.  I thought it was perfect, but my wife would have liked less onion and more soup.

Endive salad -- fantastic!  Only the French can do such great salads.

Monkfish -- not so good.  But then again, it reminded me of sole menuire that I've had at one of the best Parisian brasseries.

The wines -- nice selection, but you'll have to venture outside of Bordeaux for the good values.  The Chinon cabernet franc that we had worked wonders with the guinea fowl stuffed with foie gras on a bed of sour cabbage.

It doesn't have the same "cool" vibe as Comme Ca, Anisette or Church & State.  But then again, none of the brasseries in Paris feel like that either.  To me, this is what a true neighborhood brasserie should be.
Recommended Dishes French onion soup, guinea fowl

Authentic French bistro 5/31/2009 For those of you looking for the non-Cal Frenched rendition of a French brasserie in L.A., look no further, Culver City has a new venue for you.  The food menu seems very solid with various selections as is the wine menu which features nice food wines that are moderately priced.  Culver City has a new contender in the French brasserie genre. Recommended Dishes Pied de cochon farci (pig feet), Assiette de charcuterie (house pates and sausages), Pintade au foie gras guinea fowl (chicken with inlaid foie gras with seared cabbage and cognac sauce)
