The sparse menu showed few food items but included Guinness beer! The menu primarily looked like food you'd find at a bar, hence the name - Bar Food. This pub, or gastropub - the new moniker and also in the spirit of Father's Office, offers a large selection of beers and wines with comfort food items. I was happy to find mac'n cheese, burgers, and anything with the word potato. We also ordered spicy tuna, bangers, shepherd's pie, and fish & chips.
I was really looking forward to the Mac'N Cheese, since I saw it on their menu - the week before in researching the place. But unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. Though there was bacon, it lacked a necessary savoriness, that you'll find almost at any other restaurant. Most places that have Mac'N Cheese will have a cool twist, either with bacon, broccoli, ham, truffle, or something different. It was baked, so the cheesy was crusty - that's a good thing. But again, lack of saltiness hurt its chances. . .
The burger and bangers were ok. The spicy tuna and shepherd's pie did stand out. I think everyone liked the spicy tuna. The rice was a little harder than I would have liked. I know I liked the shepherd's pie with lamb, thought I think others didn't like it. We had two different types of bangers - thai style and regular. I personally like sausage . . . almost any type of sausage. I like the green mashed potatoes - I think they were mashed with basil or something. Jason, the owner/manager, came by and told us that that was his creation.
The two things that everyone agreed was great was the potato puffs and the sweet frites. I asked our server what her favorites were, and she strongly suggested potato puffs, which were also the most ordered item as well. I think we went through two orders of each.
Personally, I liked the venue and most of the food items. I think the uncomplicated menu with comfort foods with beer & wine is a great combination. But unfortunately, the location, with my personal bias, doesn't help. Prices are reasonable - with our group of 10 or so, we each paid about 26 with tax and tip.

Sitting in the office, we contemplated several different options for our after meeting dinner. We gave serious consideration to Korean, since I had a huge craving for cow's tongue. In the end, we decided to try out Bar Food. Suffice it to say, I wasn't too pleased with our decision. When I have a craving, I have to have it.
As we sat at our table looking at the menu, I wasn't too impressed. The menu seemed simplistic, at best, with 20+ some odd items catergorized by Salty, Hot, Cold and Sweet. Thai Bangers and Mash, olives, calamari...no descriptions and no initial excitement as to what would come.
We basically said 'screw it' and ordered a bunch of stuff. Our first dish, mixed greens, came out. I'm not a big salad guy, but I took a bite. Immediately, I sensed something fishy going on. The lightly dressed greens were more than the iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and Thousand Island dressing I was expecting. Much more. After the arugala and the pate, I realized I'd been swindled, but in a good way.
As more dishes came, it hit me just how good the food really was. NOTHING excites me more than being surprised by a menu. The mussels, the grilled cheese sandwich, the bangers and mash...really wonderful! The calamari came with a Sriracha aioli that had a great depth and spice to it, as did the sweet fries.
In the middle of our meal, the owner Jason stopped by our table to welcome us and shake our hands.
In the end, I realized how great a spot Bar Food was. It seemingly seeks to minimize expectations, while delivering simple and delicious gastropub fare. The beer selection isn't overwhelming, but offerings such as Mirror Lake, Blue Moon, Pilsner Urquel, to name a few, provided great pairings for the food.
The food isn't Earth-shattering, nor does Bar Food intend it to be. It is, however, a refreshing and delicious option in these difficult economic times. Service is excellent, as is the environment. I can see this place becoming a regular hang out for us. As for the cow tongue craving? That'll be taken care of in a couple of days. Even if it wasn't, I'd be okay. Bar Food satisfied me.

This cool and casual gastropub is a good spot to meet for happy hour or casual drinks. It's all about the copious beer selection, well matched nibblees, and Euro pop that make for a nice chill session.

Quelle Surprise!
5/30/2009
The owners here want to surprise you. That's why the menu is deliberately and deceptively simple: mussels, grilled cheese, bar burger, arugula, hot dog, sweet fries, etc. According to the owner, it's just bar food so why add any descriptions? Well, because the food is much better than your typical bar food. The one tell-tale item on the list that may clue you in? Pate. What is pate doing at a bar? I like it.
I am a fan of setting expectations low and having them surpassed which is something Bar Food does well. The Thai bangers and mash is their signature dish and it is a delicious take on bangers with a nice (is it white pepper?) heat in the sausage and green mash potatoes that have the barest hint cilantro.
The grilled cheese sandwich comes with a bowl of tomato soup which you don't expect because it isn't even mentioned on the menu. The meunster and cheddar grilled cheese sandwich along with its made-in-heaven tomato soup combo is the perfect comfort food.
In the end, the owner is right. It is just bar food. But I'd say bar food done well. The beer selection is great and all the better to enjoy with food that won't make you regret eating at a bar. A big plus, all dishes are under $10.
