It seems like I've been hearing about The Oinkster from left and right lately! It was on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," it was featured in the "Hot on Yelp" section of Yelp.com last week, and it was recently on a list of the best burgers in LA. So, one night after work this week, I decided to pay The Oinkster a visit.

The Two Guys have been dying to try The Oinkster, in nearby Eagle Rock, for a few years. We’re ashamed to say that it’s been so long, given that the experience today convinced us that we’ll soon be regulars.

Best Reuben Sandwich in Los Angeles
1/22/2010
I don't know what the people below are talking about. First, let's talk about service. Every time I walk into the Oinkster, I get greeted like I'm their best friend. Everyone that works there is sincerely happy about working there, and seem to be treated very well by the owners. This joint has that friends that have become family vibe, and everyone seems glad to be be there. Now let's talk about sheer quality. My first bite into this sandwich screams with time and effort that was put into perfecting this seemingly simple dish, and its intricate complexities speak of a staff that know nothing but to strive for the best. I had the Best Reuben Sandwich I've ever had there. The meat was perfectly cured and was light years ahead of any Reuben I've had, and I've had a lot. If you love reuben sandwiches, then this is the Best Reuben Sandwich in LA.

Oinkster...Interesting concept
11/18/2009
After a long day at the Zoo, we stopped here for lunch/dinner with the kids. Lucky for us, it was happy hour...kids got burger/fries/drink combos for $3.99. Not a bad deal for a good-sized freshly made burger, their famous belgian fries, and a drink. I didn't try the burger, but my 6 year-old had no trouble consuming most of it. The fries were super crisp, fried to order, and were served with a wonderful garlic aioli. I would eat almost anything slathered in that aoili.
I had the loaded pastrami (with grueyre cheese and slaw). Their pastrami is house-cured, so there is a signficantly less amount of salt and the spices allowed the pastrami to seem meatier and almost delicate. I rather enjoyed it. I wasn't crazy about the slaw in the sandwich, but it kept it fresh and provided a nice textural balance. It was a huge sandwich...I only ate half. However, I did not have trouble consuming the fries. Really crisp with a pillowy potato center. Cooked just right, in my opnion. And wonderful aioli. The Oinksterade was refreshing after a long day of walking around the zoo, lemon-y, orange-y with some fizz.
The husband tried the regular pastrami, and was not as enthused because he's used to The Hat's pastrami. But he did enjoy his chocolate milkshake.
It was quiet when we arrived. The counter service was quite helpful because it was our first time there, and helped us keep the costs down because of the happy hour specials. Service was prompt and very friendly.
I would go back. The fries are enough to encourage me back. The happy hour deals are great...$3.99 burger/fries/drink combo, $1 order of fries, $1 drinks, and $3 if you want a 5 lb order of the fries.
Please note, though, the parking lot fits about 10 cars at the most. You'll need to find street parking in the nearby neighborhood otherwise.

The name immediately conjured up images of a greasy old BBQ joint. Their website concept page "invites diners to kick back and enjoy high-quality American classics in a relaxed, modern and fun environment." While I agree about the relaxed, modern and fun environment, the food was an eclectic mix of some American classics and Philipino inspired foods.
