Pink's Hot Dogs

Pink’s has evolved into a Los Angeles institution from its humble hot dog wagon beginnings in 1939. Its eponymous all-beef hot dogs are served with chili, mustard, and onions. Numerous iterations abound. The Guadalajara dog, Chicago Polish dog, Coleslaw dog as well as burger and burrito options keep boredom in check.

Paul Pink started his hot dog stand, a large-wheeled pushcart to be exact, in 1939. He outgrew the hot dog wagon in 1946 and traded it in for a small building that was constructed on the same spot where the wagon stood. For the past 70 years, locals and tourists alike have been queuing up and patiently waiting for a taste of Mr. Pink's famous hot dogs. Oh, the power of hype and nostalgia!

great hot dog, crappy wait
7/30/2008
i'm a hot dog fanatic, so i'm real picky about my hot dogs. pink's was famous, so i had to try it -- despite the nearly 30-45 minute wait, the hot dog was very delicious. at the time, i had never had a "snappy" hot dog before-- i've always gone for the thick, costco style dogs -- that's what i knew, that's what i loved. but this converted me because it's one of those thin dogs with the casings that snap on the bite, giving you a little juice. that may sound horrible, but i don't know how else to describe it. it tastes so good....
still, part of the whole hot dog experience is the ordering process, and i just can't justify waiting for that long for a dog... part of the beauty of hot dogs is their quick accessibility, and how it is so easy to eat (one-handed, on the run, etc.), and not to mention-- they are damn cheap. why do you think it is the #1 fast food in NY? anyways, the wait and crowd killed it for me. i'd rather go to costco and get my hot dog quick, and eat it in peace without drunken club-goers yelling in my ear.

Worth $400...maybe not

The first time I came to Pink's, I ended up paying over $400 in impound fees. Do not park at the Quizno's around the corner, even at 2 am. Those unscrupulous towing companies will tow your car out of nowhere. Still, the hot dogs were good enough to placate me. You can imagine how good a hot dog it really is.
The dogs have a springy casing that bounce when you bite into it. That texture combined with the meaty flavor make Pink's the best hot dogs I've had. I've tried a few places in NY, Crif Dogs, Gray's Papaya, but I still think that Pink's is number one. After returning several times, always parking in the appointed lot or street parking, I decided that the hot dogs are best enjoyed plain without any toppings. The toppings just distract from how good the hot dog itself really is. Much like how a good burger doesn't need its toppings to speak for it.
Beware of the huge crowds. It can easily take over 45 mins to get a hot dog at almost all times of the week.
