Solid replacement for old Lu Din Gee Duck House
05/02/2010
I was pleasantly surprised by Tasty Duck.  First, the people are quite friendly and warm.  Very unusual in this part of town.  Many of the dishes are carryovers from the former Lu Din Gee, but aside from the duck, I asked the servers what they do best and they recommended Sea Cucumbers.  Said it was a specialty of the chef, who hails from Yantai city in Shan Dong province, northern China.  Normally, I'm not a fan of sea cucumbers, but this one was really quite good.

As for the duck, I actually would rate it slightly better than the Duck House.  The skin is crispier, the wrapping is lighter, but most importantly, the sauce is fantastic.  I couldn't stop eating it.  The soup was not as good as Duck House though, but it hardly mattered as I was all-engrossed in the skin, meat and sauce.

We also tried the Hakka Small Stir Fry, which was quite tasty and more flavorful than the Shanghainese version.  Overall, this was a good find.

Stuffy and not that great
04/14/2010
I know this place is supposed to be great, which is why I reserved it and even brought a jacket with me to NY.  But I just wasn't too impressed with it.  The preparation is classic traditional French, and yes, it was executed correctly.  It's just not my style.  Soft bland fish drenched in rich beurre blanc does not make a 3-star for me.  And I didn't like the fact that they gave us the worst seat in the house, even though the restaurant was only half-full. Good wine service though.  Incredibly stuffy atmosphere.

Great food!
04/14/2010
I typically don't like this type of cuisine, and I've never seen the chef on TV so didn't know what to expect.  But this food here was fantastic! Perfectly cooked, not over-seasoned (like Craft can be), great quality meats with different takes on the preparation.

Some serious retro dining
04/14/2010
This place is just feels old school.  Even old for Mad Men.  If you're looking for full-on, full-flavored, salty meat and innards, this is the place for you.  I saw a table of large investment bankers next to us, all striped shirts and suspenders, celebrating a hostile takeover.  They were in their element.  As for me, I don't need to be hit over the head with a sledgehammer all the time.  I love the ambiance and the uniqueness of this place though.  Great bar.
