Located in the same indoor mall as Ranch 99 Market, Golden China cooks up a variety of homey Szechuan, Cantonese, Taiwanese, and Shanghainese fare. Nearly every table was filled at this no-frills comfort food haven when we arrived.

Shaved snow is a very distant cousin of Hawaiian shaved ice. Its unique ribbon-like texture is achieved by freezing huge chunks of flavored water and milk, and then shaving it using a special machine.

Our destination was Dongbu Live Fish, a restaurant specializing in thinly sliced raw seafood known as hwal uh. Dongbu sits in the far corner of strip mall in the same complex as a veterinarian practice and a DIY barbecue joint. It is one of a handful of Korean businesses dotting the city's mostly Taiwanese landscape.

The two dudes behind Flying Pig are Joe Kim and James Seitz, culinary school grads from the California School of Culinary Arts in Pasadena. Taking a cue from the truck that started it all, Flying Pig's menu blends Asian and Pacific Rim flavors with French technique.

Great Balls on Tires was founded by Clint Peralta, Michael Brombart, and Sharron Barshishat, three friends who attended the Le Cordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts. According to the truck's website, the trio chose to focus on meatballs because of their universal popularity and appeal.

Yatta-! is far and away the silliest nouveau food truck that I have ever encountered. There's a sign posted on the truck claiming that "no Pokemon were harmed during the making of your roll" and a mysterious ninja sneaks in and out of the truck during service. Not to mention, Yatta-! is staffed by some really funny dudes. I must say that it's  pretty refreshing to be around an establishment that doesn't take itself too seriously.

The Astronomer ate at Ph? Nguy?n Hoàng in San Gabriel a few months back with a group of friends and found it tasty enough to bring me in for a taste. We arrived at the restaurant on the later side of dinner and found the place still humming on a Saturday night.

Sharing a particularly rundown block with 7 Days Swap Meet, the restaurant looked like a complete disaster from the outside. The California sun had clearly taken its toll on both the roof and signage, while the bold promises of chow mein and chop suey seemed dated and out of touch. Honestly, I was a bit frightened by the joint, but also deeply intrigued.

Viet Noodle Bar serves a hodgepodge of Vietnamese dishes to a hip and trendy crowd.  According to the Los Angeles Times article  “Inspired by a World of Ingredients”, the restaurant’s owner, Viet Tran, traveled across North Vietnam for five years and studied noodle-making and soy milk-making in little villages. Viet Soy Cafe in Silverlake and Viet Noodle Bar were inspired by his experiences abroad.
